Sexual Addiction and Treatment

Seriously, sex addiction is not a laughing matter and can cause terrible agony to the addict concerned and even to the society at large if the sufferer commits sexual crimes because of the affliction. Instead of having normal and healthy sexual relationships, sex addicts use sexually related activities to satisfy their compulsive urges. They fantasize and get involved in sexual activities until it becomes detrimental to their daily livelihoods.

The irony is that sex addicts may be having plenty of sex, but that does not mean that they are enjoying themselves. Sex addicts use sex as a release outlet of their addiction rather than having meaningful sexual relationships with their partners.

There are many types of behavior in people who are addicted to sex. That is why not all of them use the services of prostitutes or have affairs. Some may just be addicted to pornography, excessive masturbation, or voyeurism. The main difference between an addiction to sex and normal healthy sex is when the addict continues the activities until negative consequences occur.

So what are the symptoms of sex addiction? The symptoms are varied, but if you find yourself engaging in cybersex, phone sex, excessive masturbation, voyeurism, exhibitionism or extramarital affairs amongst other symptoms, then you may be a sex addict.

So what causes sex addiction? Well, having a parent who is an addict increases the likelihood that the child may grow up thinking that such behaviors are normal. A child growing up in a home with sexually abusive parents can also be a potential victim.

Some believe that it is caused by certain inbalanced neurotransmitters in the brain that aggravates the problem. This is because the act of having sex releases a strong feeling of euphoria, and as such the addicts continue the activities to get the experience to be repeated again and again.

Sex addiction has many dire consequences. It may lead to the addict committing sexual crimes, frivolous spending on prostitutes, injuries to sexual organs by using dangerous sex toys or indulging in sadomasochistic sex, contracting sexually transmitted diseases and many other negative consequences.

So how can sex addiction be treated and cured? Therapists say that a period of abstinence gives the addict time to find out the reasons of the addiction. This abstinence can be done in a rehabilitation center. Part of the rehabilitation will include individual or group counseling sessions focusing on the why the person behaves this way and to also identify the triggers for the addict’s extreme behavior.

Treatments also include helping the addict learn how to have healthy sexual relationships. For this part of the treatment to succeed, the addict’s partner must also be included in the therapy. After recovery from the treatments and counseling, ex-addicts can also join many support groups to prevent relapses.

If you think that you may be becoming a sex addict, then you may want to contact the rehabilitation centers in your locality for evaluation and treatments or contact support groups such as Sex Addicts Anonymous, Sexual Compulsives Anonymous or Sexaholics Anonymous for help.

You can also seek medical help from your personal medical doctor because in certain cases, prescription medicines can also help to deal with the compulsive part of the addict’s behaviour.
